Worldy Ideas

When you’ve got Writer’s Block, I suggest looking at your surroundings. The world can give you ideas. For example, let’s say that you were writing a story about someone who finds a portal to another world. But, you’re stuck on the portal part. What kind of everyday item could be a portal? Well, the answer’s all around you! You spot a lantern on your patio, and an idea pops into your head: A lantern portal! The light could attract the character, and they will find the lantern by being intrigued by the light! Genius, right? But, where does the character go? I mean, it’s another, more magical world, but what’s it like? What are the people (or things) that live there like? You look around and notice an open book on a nearby table. It’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl! You see that the page it’s open at is where they meet the Oompa-Loompas. That gives you the idea of creatures rather than people. See what I mean? It’s the world around you–and it’s useful!
